Spring time is one of my favorite times of year. The weather is warming up, the grass is getting green, flowers are blooming, and it just seems like the outdoors are calling my name! Although those seasonal allergies are a thorn in my side, it is worth suffering through them if I can get some sunshine.
As a mother to a toddler and a baby, I value my time with my kids more than anything else in the world. That doesn’t mean it isn’t always a challenge finding activities to keep us engaged.
I have put together a list of simple, fun activities you can do with your kids during the spring time.
Activities
1. Plant some flowers
Going to a nursery and letting my kids pick out flowers is one of my favorite things to do in the spring. They can pick out the color for the season and help plant the flowers in the planters. It is a task that I already plan on doing in the spring and by making it a special activity for me and my kids, it turns a task into a sweet tradition.

2. Go on a nature walk
Exercise is great for busy families and walks together gives us the chance to show our kids that taking time to exercise is important. Family walks are also a great time to talk about your day and catch up. I recommend playing ISpy with your child. This is a beloved game in my house and always gets my kid engaged in conversation and helps him make observations. Depending on the age of your child, this is a great time to encourage language skills and conversation. My child is a toddler and building his vocabulary and conversation skills is something we are always looking for opportunities to build on.
3. Kick the soccer ball around the backyard or at a park.
This is a simple activity and gets you and your child moving. If you want, run to the Dollar Tree and grab some cheap cones and set them up to go through as an obstacle course!
4. Blow bubbles
If your child isn’t a fan of sports, grab some bubbles and see who can make the biggest one! My son loves to chase the bubbles and practice blowing bubbles.
5. Paint with water
I did this activity as a child and I still have memories of it. Grab a bucket of water, a little soap, a sponge, and a paint brush. Find a spot on the house or against the fence and let your child “paint” using the soapy water. I remember absolutely loving watching the brick change color as I painted them. This activity is also great because the area will dry and give another spot on the canvas for your child to “paint”. A crowd favorite for sure!
6. Go on a nature scavenger hunt.
Grab a copy of my free scavenger hunt guide and enjoy the day outside making observations! This is a great activity to encourage creativity and open ended thinking for your child. If your child struggles finding items on the scavenger hunt, model by thinking aloud what you see. “Oh, I see a yellow flower, that marks off my yellow spot. Do you see anything brown or hear anything making noise? Oh, I hear a bird chirping, let’s mark off the sound spot!”
7. Go to the library and look for spring time books.
This is an activity that gets you out of the house and into one of the best places for growing readers! Take my free library checklist and see what books you can find at your local branch library.
8. Have a picnic outside.
Make some PB&Js and head outside for a picnic. This is such a fun thing to do at home. It gives us new scenery for lunch and fresh air to enjoy. You can do a picnic anywhere but we often enjoy them in the backyard. It is easy because we don’t have to leave the house and we can still run inside for the bathroom or extra snacks.
9. Go camping.
I recently grabbed a tent on sale at Walmart. It was a huge hit with my son! We haven’t camped over night yet, but even setting up the tent in the backyard and playing inside it has provided us much entertainment this spring season.
10. Make s’mores.
This is hands down my son’s favorite thing to do together. The weather isn’t too warm and as long as the wind isn’t too strong, we make a fire outside and toast some marshmallows. This is extra, but we also put up the projector and watch a family movie outside. I hope this memory stays with my kids and they remember those fun nights together around the fire.
I hope you are able to try out some of these activities with your family and make some memories this spring season!
